Freezing Handicaps Temporarily

This article applies to the League Manager Customers.

Sometimes leagues want to freeze handicaps temporarily due to things like playoff rounds. There are a couple of ways you can accomplish this depending on your long term goal:

I Never Want These Rounds to Count

If you never want those rounds to count for handicapping (including for the following season), then you will uncheck the "HDCP" checkbox next to each player's name when entering scores. This will exclude those scores from ever being counted in the handicap calculation.

I Want These Rounds to Count After Playoffs are Done

In this instance, keep the HDCP checkbox checked, but change your handicapping settings before entering the scores:

  • Change setting #7 "Automatic Handicap Calculation" from "GLT (Automatic)" to "GLT (Manual)"
  • Enter your playoff rounds as you normally would. Handicap will not change
  • Once you're done with your playoffs, you MUST change the setting back to "GLT (Automatic)"
  • Then do a one-time update of handicaps under Weekly Admin -> Update Handicaps

Can't I Just Leave Handicapping on "Manual" and Tell the System to Update When I Want?

While you can, there's huge downsides in doing this. First, except in rare instances, there's no reason not to have handicaps automatically calculate after each score. Playoffs are one reason. The only other legit scenario is for leagues who play multi-day tournaments where they want to lock in handicaps for those tournament rounds.

The downsides are multiple. If you forget to update handicaps, all your matches will be calculated incorrectly, and the only way to fix it would be to delete all the scores you entered, update handicaps, then reenter the scores. As bad as that sounds, if you forget to update for a couple of weeks, you'd have to re-do ALL of those weeks!

Do yourself and your players a favor and leave handicapping on "Automatic"
